about

I am and have grown up homeless. My Presidential Scholarship enables me to have a home in the dorms during the school year. When we were required to evacuate our dorms due to Covid-19, I had no where to go. I took the first option available: to be quarantined in a household with three other people. Our quarantining system was safe at first. Over three weeks one of our housemates spent the entire day everyday on her computer exposing herself to the paranoia the media incited on Covid, which was part of what lead her to having a psychological break.

I find myself having to go inward as I am staying in–this has subsequently lead me to continuous recollections of my past. I believe this was happening to her as well, as she started to project her pain onto one of our housemates which led her to attack them. Because of this attack, we had to call the cops; six officers came to our house, she willingly went with them to the local mental institution where they officially diagnosed her with a psychological break.

I made these tracks entitled "traps" during the third week of quarantining in this situation. They were a way of sonically trapping my mind into a state of exploration within major sonic realms (in other words, committing to solely using major triads and seventh chords, allowing for occasional "mistakes" (non-major triads or seventh chords)). These tracks helped me trap (focus) my mind in sonic realms that encouraged me to form a sense of happiness (invocation) within an environment that was formulating psychological terrorization.

I believe this period of self-quarantining in order to promote safety asks human beings to generate personal systems for maintaining their psychological health and that this album/process/praxis is a form of prayer as it goes beyond the singular into the plural: it is a form of finding a location within the self in order to contribute to/participate in the world. Creating these traps in major keys helped me focus my psychosis during quarantining so that I could be safe as I involuntarily recollected my personal traumas.

I hope this record can initiate a method of psychological attendance as well as a prayer. I devote this work to my housemate who struggled immensely.
